At Last Snow!

We finally are experiencing winter weather in the South!  We were wandering if winter would ever arrive.  We had cold snaps in early October and into November, but December arrived and it felt like spring.  January temperatures felt more like mid March weather and then things changed last week. Highs topped out in the mid 30s and lows in the teens.  Hopes for snow increased during the week. Then finally we were teased on Wednesday afternoon and evening with large wet snow flakes.  The weather man promised more would come on Thursday evening and all the kiddos in the area crossed their fingers and waited.

We woke on Friday to four inches of wet snow.  Not everyone in our county or nearby counties woke to the white stuff.  Posts flooded Facebook showing snow or the lack of it.  Little Man threw on clothes and headed out to play.  The weather had changed from snow to freezing rain and sleet throughout the day.  The neighborhood boys were bundled and didn't care what the weather was doing.  They were sledding and having a blast.

The freezing rain and sleet continued all day and finally changed over to a powdery snow Friday evening.  We accumulated three to four more inches of snow during the night hours.  This of course delighted the boys for a second day of winter fun.

Today, the snow is slowly melting, but not as fast as I had thought it would.  We have been home bound for three days now.  I don't like driving in the mess.  I like to stay inside and look out upon the winter wonderland and use the time as a reason to take a nice winter nap and just be still.

That is the beauty of a southern snowfall.  It sticks around for a couple of days and fades away.  The snow doesn't become gray and yucky looking.  It doesn't wear out its welcome.   It allows us to see a pretty side to an otherwise drab winter landscape.  Sometimes we only get one chance to see snow in the winter.  Other times we get two or three glimpses of this beauty.  We slow down and take a good look.

Our northern friends do get sick of the snow.  At least, that is what I am told by many.  The snow becomes grungy and stays too long.  These friends laugh at us Southerners when it snows.   However when they experience a southern snowfall, they realize how beautiful our snow is and how it doesn't wear out its welcome.  They come to appreciate it.

Trying To Get Caught Up

I have neglected writing posts, lately.  The intent has been there, but the time has not.  Life gets in the way and unfortunately the blog is on the lower priority list.

Here is a run down of the happenings over the past month.

My mother had foot surgery.  Hopefully, it will help her walk better.  The kids and I love taking her on outings and trips.

We told her she has a Frankenstein foot now!

Samson has grown by leaps and bounds.  We had him neutered and he never new what happened.

Coming home from surgery...he is still drugged.

Samson and Sally B resting after a long day playing in the snow.

We have attended various classes and field trips.  Egee enjoyed the puppetry class at our local library.  They are working on creating a play to perform later in the year.  Little Man had fun creating a boat and seeing how much weight it could support.  They both enjoyed the Youth Theater version of Cat in the Hat.  We also took in the local art gallery and science center.

Building with legos at the Science Center.

Learning about Leonardo DiVinci at the Science Center.

Mr. Jack instructing at the Landrum library program.

The girls are designing their boat.

Little Man busy working on his boat.

Cat In The Hat performance.

The kids have had play dates and sleep overs.

Little Man is playing basketball and between practices and games, we are always on the go.  The team is learning more and getting better with each game.

Egee is doing great with the clogging.  The director of the school gave her a high compliment on her natural ability to clog.  She couldn't believe she has only been clogging since October.  Of course, this brightened Egee's day!

We experienced two snow falls this past month.  The massive snow storm was last week.  Luckily, we did not lose power!  Then to top off the crazy weather week, we felt the shock of an earthquake 100 miles down the road!

Ginger bread muffins and wassail make a cold day warmer!

Now, we are all recovering from head colds.  Hopefully, I won't take as long to post on our adventures in the coming days.

Snow!

We finally got to see the white stuff!

Yesterday, Little Man was outside in shorts playing basketball.  Today, we have an inch of snow!  Only in the south.

Egee and Sally B watching the snow fall.
Going out to inspect the snow.
Making a snowball.

This is our first snow fall in since 2011.  Last year the children were so disappointed.  So needless to say, they are excited.  We better enjoy it today, because by tomorrow it will be gone.

A No Show for Snow

We have had rain for the past four days. With the ground saturated and the dreary looking sky endless, the only glimmer of hope for a change was the chance of snow.  However the sky just didn't look like a snow sky.

Almost 4 1/2 inches of rain today!

You see here in the south, a southerner isn't particulary against snowfall.  We like a fair amount for the kids to play in and make a snowman, but we like the conditions for snow to be ideal.  Our weather has not been ideal.  The yards are too muddy for the children to play in snow right now.  So no one was really rooting for the event to take place, even the kids!

Another condition for snowfall happens to be it must last no more than a day or two on the ground.  After that, it becomes dirty looking and everyone has had their fill of a snow day.  At least the forecast would cooperate for that!

So we spent Thursday wandering if we would have snow in the evening.  The rain was coming down hard and the roads flooding.  It never really became cold during the day.  We were out and about with light jackets.

Evening came and my parents picked up Egee to spend a few days with them.  The rain had slacked off by then and the temperature began to drop.  Was the snow getting ready to arrive?  Still no real excitement from the kids.

Little Man and I looked out the window a few times and never saw flakes.  We only heard the pitter patter of rain.  Egee called and reported no snow, just rain.

We finally went to bed and awoke to sun drenched rooms.  The house did not have the quiet feeling that a snowfall brings.  When I looked outside, there was no visible sign of even a hint of snow.  Oh well, we will hope for snow later.  Our good snow falls happen in late Febuary and early March!
