Understanding Idioms

I stumbled upon a great book on idioms the other day at the library.  So many idioms are not used anymore in daily life, but the children read them in older books.  It is important that they understand the meanings.  So, how to teach these quirky sayings without it becoming boring to them is challenging.  That is when I stumbled upon "The Cat's Pajamas" by Wallace Edwards.

The book is beautifully illustrated and captivates the reader.  Each picture draws upon the idiom and leads to a nice discussion to help understand the idiom.  A plus is each idiom is defined in the back of the book.  (Just in case you are unfamiliar with the saying.)

When we finished with the last page, we noticed the cat holding a note asking if we found all the hidden cats in the illustrations.  We had not hunted for hidden cats.  So, we went back and studied the pages hunting for them.  The children had fun. Some were very obvious and others took a bit of time to find.

This book is going on the list to be checked out again in a couple of years as a refresher for idioms.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
